Fiber Arts Collage

Develop your creativity in a fun and exhilarating class using fabric, paints, metallic foils, thread, beads, and found objects to create an exciting fiber arts collage. In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of fabric painting which includes painting; spraying; sponging; spraying; dribbling; splattering; stamping; printing with leaves, vegetables and found objects; sun printing; mono printing; gel printing; and stenciling with sequin waste and other meshes. Some of the techniques students will experiment with are performing fabric manipulations (Shibori) before applying paint; tape and freezer paper resists; and several different applications of metallic foil. The fabrics created using these techniques will be combined to create a collaged wall hanging, which can then be embellished with fabric beads, thread, beads and other found objects.

Susan literally brings half of her studio with her for this class, including four types of fabric paints, several types of sponges, foam stamps, Indian fabric stamps, string stamps, leaves, novelty paint brushes, rubber stamps and more. Class price includes all the fabric paints and adhesives for metallic foil used in class, novelty fabrics, metallic foil, vegetables for printing, an extensive student booklet (approximately 50 pages), fusible webbing, and more. A supply list will be provided at registration.

Biography

Susan was an adult when she discovered the exhilarating world of creativity. Being predominantly left-brained, she believes that if she can be creative, anyone can. Consequently, her goal is to encourage students of any age to learn to develop their creativity in a supportive atmosphere by giving them the knowledge and tools to express their thoughts/feelings or to tell a story.

Recent work includes a study of desert plants and flowers, their significant characteristics captured using a variety of quilting, fabric manipulation and embroidery techniques. Another project involves the play of light and color in desert sunsets, digital pictures of which are used as background for layers of ancient and natural southwest motifs. New work will focus on creating motifs based on southwest petroglyphs and ancient Oaxacan (as state in Mexico) civilizations for developing some whole cloth projects.

Most of my work is influenced by my curiosity with the intricacies of nature, especially my desert surrounding, and my perpetual interest in ancient people and their culture.
